Jeep is hard at work in Europe in electrifying its entire lineup by the end of 2022. These markets include Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and the Nordic region. As a way to further democratize electrification in the Jeep lineup, the American automaker is launching a new entry-level powertrain option for the Renegade and Compass called the E-Hybrid.

The new Jeep Renegade and Compass's E-Hybrid system is your typical self-charging hybrid powertrain. As such, don't expect the same pure electric range as Jeep's plug-in hybrid models such as the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe.

Both the Renegade and Compass E-Hybrid are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 130 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline engine works in conjunction with a 48-volt electric motor that produces 20 horsepower and 41 pound-feet. The electric motor comes with a belt starter generator for smooth transitions between the engine and the electric motor.

The electrified powertrain is then mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives the front wheels only. Since this is your typical self-charging hybrid, its electrified capabilities are limited to creeping during stop-and-go traffic, cruising, driving off from a stop, as well as during parking maneuvers. Still, the biggest news here is that this powertrain reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as 15 percent.

As a way to celebrate the launch of the new Jeep Renegade and Compass E-Hybrid, the American automaker is releasing an Upland special edition variant for both models. The special edition Jeeps are finished in a sustainably-produced Matter Azur paint, a contrasting black roof, 17- or 18-inch gloss black wheels, Metakrome bronze accents, and a black hood decal

Inside, the Upland models come with a headliner, floor mats, and seats that were made from recycled materials. The seats, in particular, are made in what Jeep calls SEAQUAL, which is made out of recycled plastic bottles from the ocean. Further making the seat design special are its contrast stitching, Jeep logo at the front of the backrests, and an organic vinyl insert on the upper portion of the seats.

Pricing for the upcoming E-Hybrid models of the Jeep Renegade and Compass have not yet been announced. Apart from the Upland special edition trim, the E-Hybrid powertrain will also be offered in the Longitude, Night Eagle, Limited, and S variants.
