Here's taking a look at yet another stock race between two classic legends of the Muscle car world. This video of a face-off between a 1968 Charger R/T and a 1965 GTO Tri-Power, from Road Test TV dates back to 2015, but the race itself, well it remains timeless doesn't it? It went down at the annual PSMCDR event at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex park up in Stanton.

1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum

Let's talk Charger? Well, it is a 2nd gen-Charger R/T from 1968. that is packing the 440ci under the hood. The 7.2-Liter V-8 mill dishes out 375 ponies and 480 pound-feet of torque. While a 3-speed torque flite automatic was on offer, this particular example is packing the 4-speed manual along with 3.54 rear gears. The Charger R/T tips the scales at 3200 pounds.

1965 Pontiac GTO Tri-Power

Next up, we have another legend in the form of the GTO Tri-power. The Pontiac GTO with Tri-power was considered to be one of the most desirable options at the time. Under the hood of this Pontiac lies a 389ci V-8 that pumps out 360 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque. This particular example also has a 4-speed manual transmission with 4.10 rear Posi gears. The GTO weighs 3400 lbs.

Let's see which driver can shift faster now, shall we?

The Race

After laying down some rubber onto the ground, both cars lined up at the lights. They go out and off the line, the GTO, just seemed to have the edge over the Charger. But don't dismiss the Dodge so fast last it hung on with the Pontiac, right up to the line. The results were super close. How close? Well the GTO took the win with a 1/4 mile time of 13.78 seconds at 101 mph, while the Charger did the same distance in 13.79 seconds at 100 mph.

Lets Sum This One Up

Even after being out in the wild for decades, the 1/4 mile times for both these classics that weigh as much as an aircraft carrier, in almost stock form are pretty impressive. Not taking sides here, but personally, I've always liked the way the Gen-2 Charger looks. It just hasn't aged now is it and it is indeed great to see what the kind of performance the 440 Magnum offered back in the day.
