• Ferrari’s 296 GT3 is an Epic V6 Race Car Aimed at the heart of Lamborghini and BMW

It comes with a detuned, 600 horsepower V-6 engine

Almost one year after Ferrari unveiled the 296 GTB, the Italian company is now presenting the 296 GT3 - a race car that will replace the very successful 488 GT3. With the new model, Ferrari hopes to continue a tradition started back in 1949 when the 166 MM triumphed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The model will begin its racing career starting in 2023 when it will have to face fierce competition.

Unlike the 488 GT3 which was powered by a 3.9-liter V-8, the 296 GT3 will be powered by the same V-6 engine as the BTG - marking the return of Ferrari’s six-cylinder engine to the racetrack. As a short history note, the 1961 Ferrari 246 SP was the first mid-engined V-6 car to enter and win the Targa Florio from the same year. And now back to the 296 GT3, unlike the 296 GTB, it doesn’t have any electrical assistance - as required by the new GT3 regulations. This means that the GTB’s 819 horsepower has been reduced down to "only" deliver 600 horsepower. Torque also goes down from 545 to 523 pound-feet. The engine is mated to a new transmission specially designed for the GT3. it features a single-disc clutch unit with six gears, arranged transversely for better aerodynamics and weight distribution.

The new 296 GT3 is built on an entirely new, aluminum chassis - an approach that will not only help with the weight but will also improve ballast management. Speaking of weight, the GT3 is about 220 kilos lighter - at 1,250 kilos - than the GTB. It was built on a longer wheelbase - 104.72 over 102.36 inches. There is also a new suspension inspired by the 488 GT3, featuring double wishbone arms in the front and rear for maximum grip even at high speeds. The braking system is also new and features newly designed calipers and discs (now 400 mm at the front).

Intense Aerodynamics

Ferrari’s new racer retains the design language of its road-going counterpart, but includes an aerodynamic package required by the track and performance. Its body kit was built in accordance with the new GT3 regulations and generates 20% more downforce when compared to the model it replaces. The exterior was updated with a new front splitter, new vents in the front wings, plus a huge wing that will provide extraordinary balance. Even the exterior mirrors were reshaped in order to reduce drag. The wheels were also redesigned, and they went from 20 inches in the road car to 18 inches in the GT3.

Another big update in the GT3 is the cockpit which offers improved intuitiveness, visibility, and accessibility. When compared to the old 488 GT3, the entire cabin was redesigned so that it offers the best driving position, with the main functions always within easy reach. The Sabelt seat’s position was modified to ensure optimal visibility, the steering wheel is inspired by Ferrari’s new Formula 1 single-seater, and the pedals are adjustable to help find the best position in the car.

When will the new Ferrari 296 GT3 race?
