A strange-looking Ferrari test Mule appeared and it hints at a 1960s-inspired Hypercar

It seems now more than ever that Italian carmakers are hell-bent on keeping the internal combustion engine alive, especially when it comes to high-end companies like Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Pagani. Lamborghini recently resurrected the Countach and, now, Ferrari seems to be bringing another Icona (Icon), as spy footage shows a camouflaged test mule that resembles the 1967 Ferrari 330 P4.

Just in case you are not familiar, Ferrari’s Icona series are hyper-exclusive vehicles, appealing to car collectors and enthusiasts (with the right amount of dough, of course) that feature modern tech mixed with classic design, inspired by legendary models of the Prancing Horse.

And just as the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 were inspired by the classic 250 Testarossa, 166 MM, and 750 Monza, this test mule, despite its best efforts, cannot hide its inspiration from the 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 LeMans racer.

Judging by the images, which were posted in a Ferrari forum, the prototype is in the early stages of development.

Moreover, Ferrari has not confirmed whether the car is inspired by the P4, although the resemblance is there. It looks to have a long Kamm tail with what looks to be a dual center exhaust, and at the front, it looks like it has a curved windshield that continues to the side, just like on the original 330 P4.

The car will likely make a debut sometime in 2022. It’s expected to share a platform with the LaFerrari Aperta, while propulsion will likely come from a 6.5-liter normally-aspirated V-12 with 830 horsepower and 510 pound-feet (691 Nm). Of course, whatever this turns out to be, we expect very few will be made and each one will cost a fortune.
