Steve McQueen would be proud

It has only been a week since Ford debuted the 2019 Mustang Bullitt, but a week was all the special edition ‘Stang needed to make a splash. The first-production Mustang Bullitt was a featured item at the Barrett-Jackson auction, where it fetched a top price of $300,000.

The top price of the Mustang Bullitt is impressive, even if it didn’t come close to approaching how much the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 fetched in the same auction. The $300,000 amount is still a great figure for what is basically a slightly more powerful version of the Mustang GT that also happens to carry a green body paint and an association with the classic Steve McQueen movie.

Fortunately, all the proceeds from the auction will go to Boys Republic, a private, all-boys school that specializes in at-risk children. McQueen himself has an attached history with the school, having attended it when he was an adolescent. It is said that McQueen developed a soft spot for the school, and often demanded razors and jeans in his contracts just so he could donate them to the school. The razors and jeans are solid donations, but they don’t come close to approaching the $300,000 the school will receive from the Mustang Bullitt auction.

As far as auction Mustangs go, the new Mustang Bullitt is not the most expensive special edition or first-production ‘Stang to sell at an auction. Ford’s relationship with the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture show usually comes with a special edition Mustang in the mix. These cars go for auction and collect six-figure sums, including in 2015 when a one-off, Petty’s Garage-tuned Mustang GT went for $535,000.

The most expensive Ford Mustang to sell at an auction in recent memory was the first-production 2016 Shelby GT350R. The 500-horsepower Mustang was regarded as the most hardcore incarnation of the sixth-generation Mustang, and it fetched an auction price — $1 million — befitting its status.
