It’s probably sliding into Elon Musk’s DMs right now

I blame you, Elon Musk. See, this is what happens when you successfully achieve something nobody thought you could do. The launch of Falcon Heavy into space proved that you could build a lighter and more fuel-efficient low-cost space shuttle without having to drain taxpayer’s money in the process. But, the success of Falcon Heavy has opened the doors for other companies to come out of the woodwork with their own out-of-this-world ideas. Take Partisan Motors, for example. The German startup that introduced us to the Partisan One last October is looking for a collaboration with Musk and his company, SpaceX, to bring its SUVs to the last frontier.

The Mars Edition is being pegged as an SUV that can operate on other planets besides Earth; gravity be damned

I wish there were a way to make this stuff up. That would at least explain the sheer silliness of Partisan Motors’ plan to ask Musk to shoot one of its rigs off the planet. But it’s true. The German automaker that’s responsible for the utilitarian Partisan One SUV is back with a special edition model called the Partisan One Mars Edition. Never mind that the Partisan One is the most back-to-basics SUV you’ll come across these days. The Mars Edition is being pegged as an SUV that can operate on other planets besides Earth; gravity be damned. It comes with an easy-to-assemble carbon fiber body and a fully electric drivetrain that will rely on solar panels that can help juice up the batteries after a day of driving on Mars’ red and rocky terrain. That’s assuming the SUV doesn’t float away into space first, but you get the picture.

If that isn’t strange enough for you, Partisan also says that if Musk takes up the offer, it already has a series of vehicles that are primed and ready for launch. Ok, it’s not really vehicles per say, but specific parts of the entire vehicle with simple assembly directions. It’s a lot like furniture from Ikea, except, well, not really.

For some reason, I actually want to see this happen. It takes serious chutzpah on Partisan’s part to brazenly offer up one of its SUVs to Musk so the latter can be brought to space whenever SpaceX decides to send another shuttle in that direction. Maybe Partisan’s convinced that there’s really life on Mars that it wants to have a complete monopoly of the SUV market there. Just a thought.
