Ford hasn’t revealed a lot of details about the electric F-150 yet. Other than its train-pulling stunt and the teaser image revealed recently, there isn’t much known about it. Now, however, we have a big update. As it turns out, Ford doesn’t have any plans to build an electric Super Duty truck. Ford is the best truck seller for decades now, so this might come as a shock to a lot of customers who were probably looking to upgrade to an electric Super Duty in the future. But, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that we saw it coming.

It’s Just Going To Be The Electric F-150 For The Foreseeable Future

As reported by the Detroit Free Press, FoMoCo’s President, Kumar Galhotra, shunned down all the rumors and possibilities of an electric Super Duty truck. He said, "At the moment, we do not have any plans to go into heavy-duty with battery-electric vehicles."

The F-Series is Ford’s bread and butter. Although an unpopular opinion, putting all eggs in this basket and developing just one fuss-free, reliable truck could do wonders for Ford’s electric future. In 2019, the F-Series brought in $42 billion in revenue for the Blue Oval.

Why Does It Make Sense To Not Build An Electric Heavy-Duty Truck?

There are a lot of arguments supporting this move and against it, but the most obvious reason is the limitation of electric pickups. In the case of electric trucks, the more you tow, the lesser the range you get. And, don’t even get me started on range anxiety. Electric trucks have more than enough torque available from the word go, but lack the stamina.

For instance, an Audi e-tron was put to test back in February. The SUV comes with an EPA-estimated range of 204 miles and a towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds. However, when loaded to full capacity, the E-Tron delivered a range of just 108 miles. Now, replicate the same math in the case of a heavy-duty electric pickup truck and you know how difficult and impractical it will be.

Final Thoughts

The electric pickup truck market is already so crowded, but interestingly, not a single automaker has its offering on the road yet. Almost all of them are light-duty pickup trucks. We’ll have to wait and watch how they perform when put under the pump every day for years together. The higher the load on the battery, the lower its chances of a long life. At the moment, even the performance capability and longevity of an electric truck is a grey area; so it’s good to see Ford play it smart and not try to get the first-mover advantage in a completely unexplored area.
