Ford Expects Us to Trust its V-to-V Communication With Life and Death Decisions

Ford is working on a technology known as Intersection Priority Management, and its whole purpose is to analyze how intelligent speed reductions can improve transit by limiting when cars have to stop at traffic signals or intersections. This system will use Ford’s vehicle-to-vehicle technologies to relay the information between nearby cars and city infrastructure.
It’s A Culmination Of Resources
Ford’s vehicle-to-vehicle system allows cars to communicate with each other in short-range and transmit data such as location, speed, and their direction of travel.
Ford’s Intersection Priority Management system will use this data to come up with algorithms that will inform the drivers of other cars to either slow down or speed up to avoid halting completely or bumping into the other car.
A Simple Observation Turned Into An Inspiring Idea
Ford’s foundation for the IPM system is inspired by the way humans walk in crowds. People don’t usually halt completely when they notice another person in their path; instead, they simply change speed or direction and continuously adapt to new encounters on the move. So, Ford wants to implement the same premise in cars in a more refined method to avoid collisions or stopping at a traffic signals altogether. Ultimately this will synchronize everyone on the road to make the flow of traffic more efficient.
Since V-to-V will be passing all required information to the Intersection Priority Management system, it will intelligently assess each driver to pace up or slow down.
It Has Its Own Limitations
Practically, not all cars will have vehicle-to-vehicle technology, thus creating a conundrum and rendering the system imperfect.
It goes unsaid that this technology will be very useful in autonomous vehicle tech industry too, and Ford has mentioned the same as well.
This will allow self-driving cars to come to complete stops only when they’ve arrived at their destination. However, the same logic applies here – all cars need to be autonomous for this to be safely implemented. While it’s an exciting notion, the automaker’s current Intersection Priority Management system tests will have actual drivers behind the wheel.
Sow The Seeds And Reap The Benefits
Ford’s Intersection Priority Management system is a result of two years of work in new safety technologies.
The automaker has previously developed an intersection collision warning system, as well as the Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory, which helps cars adapt to traffic light patterns in order to avoid red lights.

It’s good to see Ford doing so much in the field of vehicular safety.
