Vaughn Gittin Jr. completed a full lap of the Nurburgring, doing so while drifting the Ford Mustang RTR drift the whole way. The stunt was performed without the objective of setting a lap time. The achievement was no less remarkable, though, because Gittin Jr. became the first driver to drift a car in the 12.8-mile course.

For a man who has made a career out of drift stunts, drifting the whole stretch of the Nurburgring represents a milestone for Vaughn Gittin Jr. Not only does he become the first person to ever drift the entire 12.8-mile long Nurburgring Nordschleife, but he’s also probably going to be the only person to do it in the course’s history.

But Gittin Jr did it, presumably under the guise of an event hosted by Ford. The automaker didn’t release a lot of details about the event — or the stunt, for that matter — but it did note that Gittin Jr. accomplished the daunting task while drifting the Mustang RTR the whole way with an average speed of more than 149 mph. Predictably, the stunt also took its toll on the drift car’s tires. According to Ford, Gittin Jr. shredded “three sets of tires” in the process of completing the stunt.

Ultimately, the details will become irrelevant as we all move forward, including the actual lap time Gittin Jr. posted when he completed his lap. For the record, Ford didn’t release the time, opting only to say that the Mustang RTR “maxed out in sixth gear on the sideways entries into the bends.”

The lap time is inconsequential relative to Gittin Jr.’s real achievement. “Drifting the Nürburgring represents the ultimate challenge to me,” Gittin Jr. said. “It is something that many question whether it would be possible and whether the car and driver could do it and come out in one piece. Something inside of me had to take this on to find out.”

Vaughn Gittin Jr. eventually found out if it was possible. More importantly, he has the evidence to prove it.
