We saw the new Ford GT at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show,->ke222 but at that time, the car was still in its concept form, which meant more changes were to come. Just earlier this month, Ford GT Forum published a couple of images of what is believed to be the production, or near-production, version of the GT.->ke411 We’re not sure if the production Ford GT will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in 2016, but a recent press release has announced that there will be snap-together models of the Ford GT given away at the Ford->ke31 stand when the Detroit Auto Show Kicks off in January.

The kits will be made of 14 pieces, and will have a stamp on the bottom signifying that it was acquired as part of the auto show release. Mark Bentley, Ford’s Licensing Manager, has said, “Our annual Revell Make N Take model kit program has become a fun-filled auto show tradition.” He continued, “Letting kids build their own Ford GT is a great way to introduce them to the Ford brand and create new enthusiasts.”

The kits available at the auto show are made by Revell, and will snap together in just a few minutes. The retail version of the kit will sell for $14.99 and will have twice as many pieces. Estimated time to build the retail version of the kit comes in at about 15 minutes. Revell has worked with Ford to build snap-together kits since 2013, when it made a snap-together version of the Ford Mustang.->ke428

Why it matters

I’ve never been a Ford guy, but I like the fact that Ford and Revell are going out of their way to give something to the kids at the show. Things like this certainly make auto shows more fun for kids, who – in my experience – aren’t always interested in the cars on display until they get a bit older.

Revell has said that they enjoy building model Ford kits for Ford and claims Ford model kits are some of the most sought after. My question is, are they sought after because people like Ford, or is it because you know the plastic model kit isn’t going to break down on a regular basis? OK, that was a little harsh, but I know some of you Chevy fans out there were thinking it.

Like I said, I’m not a Ford guy, but in all fairness I’ve liked most generations of the Mustang, and I’ve always been a fan of the Ford GT. At the end of the day, the kids are going to remember receiving these fun little kits and enjoy them, and that is what really matters.
