The coolest concept in Detroit this year?

Chinese carmaker GAC has set its sight on selling car in the United States in 2019 and it has been testing waters by bringing all sorts of vehicle at North American auto shows. GAC also joined this year’s Detroit showcase with a bunch of cars that are already available in China. Among them, the GS8, a midsize SUV that will become the first Chinese vehicle sold in the U.S. But by far the most spectacular model shown by GAC at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show is the Enverge concept.

We’ve already discussed the sporty and decidedly impressive design of the crossover, but what we didn’t know until it was brought to Detroit is that it has a bunch of cool features. On top of the gull-wing doors, which are rather uncommon on an SUV, the Enverge also has removable foglamps. The LED units slide out and detach to be used as flashlights, which might come in handy when you want to do some off-trail exploring. Or you simply dropped your house keys in the dark. The roof pod houses a Segway scooter, a welcomed feature in crowded cities or old city centers with narrow streets.

The cabin looks somewhat futuristic, but by far the most impressive features are the virtual reality displays on the side windows. This is a bit confusing when the vehicle is not running, as the windows appear matte white. You can see almost nothing through them and they seem awkward at first glance. "How in the hell are you supposed to see what’s happening around the car with just the windscreen transparent" I said to myself when I got the first shots of the interior. Well, it turns out that the exterior is displayed on the matte windows. A bit useless I think, but hey, concept cars are supposed to have ludicrous features that aren’t necessarily useful.

But the Enverge isn’t just about futuristic looks and cool features. It also boasts a potent electric drivetrain that pair four electric motors to a 71 kWh battery. The latter provides 370 miles of range and can be recharged wirelessly. Only ten minutes are enough for an autonomy of 240 miles.

But as cool as the Enverge may be, GAC has no plans to turn it into a production model. All we can hope is that some of the cool feature above will make it on the company’s upcoming production models, especially those scheduled to go on sale in the United States.
