Times are tough if you're into wrenching on your own ride but don't have a garage to do it in. Suddenly, even the simplest of jobs can become a nightmare, with a litany of external forces conspiring to bring your project to a grinding halt. Inclement weather, limited lighting, rough, uneven surfaces, the neighbor dog stealing your only 10 mm socket – these are the reasons garages were invented. Luckily, there's a new solution to this age-old problem. It's called Garage Time, and it's basically an online marketplace that enables folks with empty garages to rent out their spot to wrench-turners in need.

The Full Story

Basically, you can think of Garage Time as an Airbnb type of app, but for working on your car. According to Jalopnik, the company was founded by Andrew Koretz, a 31-year-old enthusiast, who got the idea after repeatedly turning wrenches on his 2002 Porsche 996 at a friend's spot in Chicago. He had an apartment in the city, and between the freezing cold weather and lack of space, Koretz realized it was time for a better solution.

Garage Time is intended for folks looking to rent out a spot to work on their car, their motorcycle, or just about any other motor-driven project. Interested renters can sell their space at whatever rates they like, offering time frames that range between a few hours and several days, with no stipulations regarding upper time limits. Garage Time merely takes a 10-percent cut on the rates paid to the renter.

Check out the Garage Time website, and you'll find each listing includes a description of the garage, the location (pinpointed on Google maps), pictures of the space, and contact info, plus the going rate. Additionally, renters can list any additional available resources that might be onsite, such as a lift, oil and fluid disposal, welding gear, mechanic assistance, pneumatic tools, and more.

We love this idea. Not only does it empower everyone to turn their own wrenches and keep their ride in tip-top shape, but it brings the enthusiast community together in new and mutually profitable ways. For now, the pickings are pretty slim, with just a smattering of posts available. But that's to be expected given Garage Time just opened shop a few weeks ago. However, the plan is to expand to other major cities on both sides of the states, including New York and San Francisco.
