The iconic Toyota Supra returned in 2019 after a 17-year-long absence. The new Supra was received with a lot of enthusiasm, but some criticized Toyota's decision to go with a BMW engine instead of a Japanese-made one. Supra fans inevitably began to compare the fourth- and fifth-generation cars, but we've never seen a proper head-to-head review of the two. Until the folks over at Throttle House got their hands on a 2021 and 1994 Supra.

The old model is among one of the first fourth-gen Supras built, as the A80 model went into production in 1993. The new Supra is the latest version, which benefits from extensive updates under the hood. Specifically, the revised 3.0-liter inline-six engine delivers a solid 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

The 1994 Supra also features a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six engine. But unlike the 2021 model, which is fitted with a BMW-build powerplant, the A80 came with a Japan-designed 2JZ-GTE mill. Probably the most iconic Japanese engine of the 1990s. The JDM power plant delivered up to 326 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque depending on the market. So the fifth-generation Supra is quicker and more powerful, but is that enough?

The video showcases both cars extensively, talking about various features and driving them in various scenarios. Both drivers seem significantly more excited behind the steering wheel of the classic Supra, but both agree that the 2021 model is also cool and exciting to drive. Their conclusion, however, is that the previous Supra remains a more iconic choice, despite a well-maintained model costing as much as the modern car.

The new Supra, on the other hand, comes with a few downsides. It doesn't feel like a JDM staple, and it's a bit expensive, approaching the prices of a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, BMW M2 Competition, and Porsche Cayman.

The video concludes that while a 2021 Supra owner would say that his dream car is a Lambo or a Porsche, the fourth-gen Supra owner would probably that he already owns his dream car. And that's the best conclusion you can draw at the end of this comparison.
