Mercedes-Benz has been offering AMG versions of the C-Class ever since its compact sedan adopted the letter C in 1993. At first it was the C36 AMG, but the modern version goes by the name AMG C63 and it's also available in a more powerful S version.

It's pretty obvious that the 2020 AMG C63 S is superior to the original C-Class AMG in every department, but how does it compare to the previous-generation, 2013-model-year variant? The folks over at Throttle House brought these cars together to find out.

The comparison includes the latest AMG C63 S Coupe, which features the twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 engine, and the 2013 C63 AMG, powered by the old but tried-and-true, naturally aspirated, 6.2-liter V-8.

The latter is equipped with the Performance Package Plus bundle, the equivalent of the S version back in the day.

Is that enough to make a difference? Yes it is, because the 2020 coupe hits 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, while the 2013 two-door reaches the benchmark in 4.4 clicks, 0.7 seconds slower.

The comparison reveals that the 2013 model is still good enough to give the 2020 version a run for its money. While the latter is newer, nicer, and features more tech and two extra turbos, the 2013 model stands out through its fantastic engine note and the drivers seem to agree that it has the better ride. One driver describes the old model as "an absolute hooligan" and claims that "you cannot beat a naturally aspirated V-8."

Pricing is also an issue here. While you can find a 2013 model for around $40,000, the 2020 AMG C63 S Coupe will set you back a whopping $110,000. That's an extra $70,000 for better looks and more tech, but not a lot of extra power. If you're torn between getting the latest or a previous-generation model, this comparison might just give you an answer, so check out Throttle House's awesome video below.
