When Hyundai->ke201 launched Genesis in 2015 as a standalone premium brand that would eventually compete against the likes of Lexus->ke47 and Infiniti,->ke36 the Korean automaker promised to have six new models in its lineup by 2020. It took a few months, but finally, the six Genesis models have been confirmed to include three luxury sedans,->ke142 two luxury SUVs,->ke145 and a luxury sports coupe.->ke141 Notice the liberal use of the word “luxury” there?

The revealing information comes by way of The Korean Car Blog, which was on hand during a Hyundai presentation where the Genesis’ product roadmap was revealed. The presentation further reveals the timetable for each model with the first one – the G90 full-sized->ke4304 luxury sedan – already penciled in to hit the market this year. Once the G90,->ke5314 which effectively takes the place of the Hyundai Equus,->ke3333 debuts, Genesis will turn its attention towards the G80 mid-sized->ke1695 luxury sedan and the “entry-level” G70 sedan. Both models are due to be released by 2017, although which of the two will be released first is still up in the air. From there, Genesis will prepare its two SUV offerings, with the first one being the mid-sized luxury SUV followed by its entry-level counterpart. Not much is known about the SUV models at the moment.

Bookending the company’s six-model lineup will be a luxury sports coupe that is scheduled to hit the market by 2020. Like the SUVs, there are no specifics on this model just yet, but there have been rumblings that it could be based on the Hyundai Vision G Concept that the Korean automaker unveiled at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance.->ke2839 The large, fastback-style design of the Vision G and the well-appointed interior fit into the characteristics of a luxury sports coupe that Genesis is looking to line up against the likes of the Mercedes S-Class Coupe and perhaps even the Bentley Continental GT.

Why it matters

So this is what Genesis will look like in a little over three years. I have to say that a big part of isn’t surprised by the models that Hyundai’s new luxury brand plans to offer. The three sedan offerings makes a lot of sense because the market the company plans to enter in is caters to a lot of executives and financially well-off people. The G90, for instance, is going to be bought and used by the same people who buy the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class, and Audi A8. Move down to the G80 and the G70 and both sedans will also be competing against a lot of established models in their respective segments.

As far as the SUVs are concerned, that’s also not a surprise since that segment is arguably the fastest growing segment in the auto industry today. When you see companies like Bentley, Jaguar, Maserati, and Lamborghini begin offering SUVs, you know it’s a market that you have to be involved in if you want to be taken seriously. Having two SUVs is a little surprising since I thought the company would also offer three variants, but I’m withholding making any kind of judgments until I see how Genesis develops these two models. Maybe one day each of the two models could give birth to multiple variants of their own. That’s a real possibility.

Finally, there’s the luxury sports coupe, which is arguably the most exciting model of the lineup. It’s exciting because, well, it’s a performance car. But there are other reasons to look forward to this model, one of which is the mystery behind Genesis’ plans for the model. At the moment, it’s hard to say what we can expect from this model because parent company hasn’t given us a whole lot of tidbits to work with. The Vision G Concept is a nice place to start, but given the timetable between the launch of that concept and the development of the actual production model, there’s a possibility that the future Genesis luxury sports coupe won’t have anything to do with the Vision G Concept. Who knows, maybe a new concept will arrive in the next two years that points us in the direction of the production model. There are still so many questions to this model that it’s hard not get excited about what we can expect.
