Can’t wait to get your hands on an all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class? If you live in Germany, there’s a way to get the all-purpose SUV, provided that you’re willing to pay a premium for it. German car dealership Hollauto is now selling a new G500 just days after the SUV was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. How exactly did the dealer get its hands on one so quickly? It didn’t because it’s actually selling a build slot for an already commissioned example.

If you’re confused by all of this, don’t be. This is another prime example of a dealership trying to make a quick buck off of a popular model. The all-new Mercedes G-Class hasn’t even gone to production yet, but since the dealership appears to have a build slot for one, it’s more than willing to flip that slot for €133,600, which converts to around $164,000 based on current exchange rates. I understand the principles of making money in business, but this example reeks of greed. Consider the price Hollauto is asking and compare it to the expected price of the G-Class — €107,040.50 ($131,000) in Germany — and the purpose is as obvious as the day is long.

Granted, this kind of practice isn’t new in the auto industry. As long as there’s a popular model that’s on the horizon, there will be those who will try to make money if they have early access to a car. In 2017 alone, flipping of slots occurred on models like the Ford GT, Honda Civic Type R, Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and a slew of other “must-have” models.

The practice got so rampant that Aston Martin actually issued a warning to dealerships about flipping build slots for the Valkyrie supercar. If you get caught doing it, you not only lose the reservation slot outright, but you’ll also get the door permanently shut on you with regards to future special edition Aston Martin models.

In the event that you are interested in Hollauto’s offer, you are getting a G500 that’s finished in Obsidian Black, rides on a set of 20-inch AMG wheels, has a brown upholstery interior with wood trim, and comes with a host of optional extras, including the Driving Assistance Package, 360-degree camera system, ambient lighting, Burmester premium sound system, rear entertainment system and a sunroof.
