Porsche just published its U.S. sales figures for the third quarter of 2020 and, surprisingly enough, the all-electric Taycan was its third best-selling vehicle.

With 1,858 units sold from July to September, the Taycan surpassed both the 911 and the 718, as well as the Panamera sedan. The Taycan comes in third behind the much more popular Cayenne and Macan SUVs.

Is Porsche's first-ever EV heading to a successful career?

The 718 lineup, which includes both the Boxster and the Cayman, sold only 1,084 units. The Panamera sedan, also available in a variety of models, including hybrids, delivered 1,064 examples.

But by far the most surprising thing here is that the Taycan sold more units than the 911.

The company's iconic sports is available in a wide variety of trims and body styles, yet Porsche delivered only 1,567 units. In the second quarter, the 911 outsold the Taycan, 718, and Panamera combined!

The all-popular Macan moved a whopping 5,466 units, while the larger Cayenne sold 4,509 examples. Macan sales are actually 15-percent lower compared to the same period last year, but it makes sense given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that could also spark a new financial crisis.

Needless to say, the Taycan scored a great achievement over these three months, but is this a sign that the EV is becoming more popular than Porsche's gas-powered cars?

It's too early to say. The Taycan is still a new vehicle so it's natural for deliveries to be high in the first months on the market. Sales of other Porsche nameplates have dropped due to the coronavirus pandemic during the third quarter and they could go up in the fourth quarter. With the facelifted Panamera right around the corner, we may see the Taycan lose a spot to the sedan and probably another one to the 911 over the next few months.

Sure, Tesla has already proved that an EV could outsell its rivals, but the Taycan could set new heights by surpassing gas-powered vehicles within the same brand.

The Porsche Taycan went into production in late 2019 and sales surpassed 4,000 units in the first six months of 2020. Porsche is currently offering six different models with outputs ranging from 402 to 751 horsepower. The range-topping Turbo S model hits 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, while the most efficient trim, the Performance Battery Plus, returns up to 203 miles under EPA standards and up to 288 miles under the WLTP cycle.
