May 20, 2020. This was the day GM was supposed to reveal the exciting new 2022 Hummer electric pickup truck. But, courtesy of the pandemic, the launch is inevitably delayed. However, GM decided to tease enthusiasts and reveal a key detail that just made the Hummer a lot more desirable.

The automaker released a short video clip that shows the Hummer electric pickup truck with the roof panels removed. Well, didn’t see that one coming, did you?

Stargazing Just Got A Lot Better

A few details about the Hummer truck are already known, but this new key detail reveal comes as a surprise. The 2022 Hummer EV will come with removable roof panels; a feature that’s synonymous with the Jeep Wrangler.

The removable roofs will come as a standard feature on all the trims. However, GM left a little disclaimer saying “actual production model may vary initial availability Fall 2021”. This means the removable roofs won’t be offered right from the launch.

There’s also no word on whether it will feature both hardtops and soft tops. The removable roof will essentially consist of four panels and a front T-bar, and all of them can be manually taken off by one person, GM told Car and Driver. There’s also no connector over the top of the front and rear window.

Is There Any Other Exciting Feature?

According to Autoblog, the Hummer EV will also feature the MultiPro Tailgate. This will be a nice add-on to the truck and make it feature-rich. For the uninitiated, MultiPro tailgate is a six-mode tailgate that can work as a standing desk or can be folded down to create a step into the bed. It is essentially two tailgates, wherein a fold-out stopper can be deployed from the inner tailgate. It can be operated at a push of a button or the key fob. On the GMC trucks, it can haul up to 375 pounds.

GM also confirmed that the 2022 Hummer EV will be built on a new battery-electric chassis and will be powered by highly advanced batteries developed at its battery lab in Warren, Michigan. Perhaps, that should help GM keep the Hummer’s price in check.

Here’s What We Know About The GMC Hummer EV So Far

-* 11,500 pound-feet of torque

-* 0-60 mph in 3 seconds

-* Up to three powertrain options

Final Thoughts

Hummer is recreating its identity from scratch in its second innings, and so far, it’s done a good job. The badge was notoriously known as a gas-guzzler, but GM dared to change this image by launching it as an electric vehicle.

The removable roofs will be launched later on, but this will certainly help boost the sales. For now, the only other pickup truck that features a removable roof from the factory is the Jeep Gladiator.
