General Motors has big plans to enter the small SUVs market. First will be Opel with the unveiling of a small SUV that will compete with the Fiat Sedici and Suzuki SX4. Chevrolet will follow shortly after with a compact SUV based on the Trax concept.

"There is a need for small SUVs and our marketing team has been working on this. First we need to develop a concept."

The small SUV would be positioned below the Opel/Vauxhall Antara and Chevrolet Captiva medium SUVs. It could be based on GM’s new small-car architecture, which is being developed by GM Daewoo Auto and Technology in Korea.

The new SUV will go on sale in 2010 and will be built in GM’s Antwerp, Belgium, factory. GM will produce 120,000 units of the new model per year.
