If you’re an enthusiast who also happens to have a family, these two cars are definitely ones that have been on your shopping list. With cars like these, even mundane tasks like trips to the supermarket or family excursions are things you can look forward to because it’s not just the kids who get to have fun. YouTuber Sam CarLegion put out a video of two Grocery Getters taking on each other in a series of drag races.

Looking to visit the ever-burgeoning SUV camp? Then the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat with an engine out of a muscle car is a great way to haul the kids around. However, if you are a bit more traditional, then you just can’t go wrong with a wagon, can you? The Mercedes E63 S AMG certainly fits that bill rather well. With this Autobahn muncher, you can rapidly cover vast distances in absolute style and have a lot of fun along the way.

This muscle car engine is mated to an eight-speed auto box and packs all-wheel-drive traction. It can tow up to 8700 pounds. It has a power to weight ratio of 0.133 horsepower/pound and starts at $82,500 before options.

Mercedes Benz E63 S AMG Wagon

In the black corner, we have a 2021 Mercedes E63 S AMG wagon. The E Class is one of the most practical and usable wagons that money can buy. Combine that with AMG power and we have a match made in heaven. The E63 S has a 4.0 Liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. It employs a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and just like the SRT, also features all-wheel drive. The Mercedes has a power to weight ratio of 0.129 horsepower/pound but is considerably lighter than the SUV tipping the scales at 4683 pounds. It has a base price of $113,000.

The Races

With the Numbers out of the way, let's RACE !!!

These two family haulers will take on each other in a series of drag races, in comfort mode, Sport mode, and a rolling race. Let's see if Bi-turbo power can keep up with a supercharger.

Race 1 - Normal/Comfort Mode

We begin the first race in comfort mode. Let’s see which of these two have a better response time and how exactly do they perform in everyday run-of-the-mill situations. The hammer drops and both drivers mash their foot into the carpet. The Durango with its supercharged V-8 has instant throttle response and is gone. The Mercedes meanwhile, has to spool up its turbo’s before it can access that power. It eventually catches up with the Dodge and passes it, right at the end.

Race 2 - Race/Track Mode

With both cars now in their most aggressive setting, it was now time to see if the Mercedes fares better. Go!!! Surprisingly, just as on the previous pass, it was the Durango that launched off the line better, but the Mercedes wasn’t that far behind this time around. It caught the SRT early on and from then on, it was a walk in the park for the wagon building a big lead and eventually clinching the win. Both cars did a second run as well, but the results were pretty much the same.

Race 3 - Rolling Race

Next, it was time for a rolling race from 30 mph. Both cars, line up with each other and are unleashed from 30 mph and yet again, the Dodge’s supercharger was quick to respond, but it couldn’t stand a chance against the Mercedes’ Bi-turbo V-8 engine. It was an easy win for the E63 wagon.

Conclusion

So, the Mercedes came out on top. Despite the supercharger’s instant response and that additive supercharger whine, the Mercedes Bi-turbo V-8 dominates this duel. It marks the end of the line for this magnificent hand-built engine and is in fact the last V-8, to come out of Affalterbach.

The Durango Hellcat is no slouch either is packing some physics-defying performance under the hood. It might even catch you out by surprise at the lights, given its understated looks. Regardless of the choice, you make between these two family haulers, you’ll have tremendous fun, behind the wheel.
