A modern day version of the infamous 1970s road trip movie, each year the route changes but the foundation of the rally stays the same: 3,000 miles of adventure with the most eccentric group of thrill-seekers imaginable, partying every night with the who’s who of international society and pop culture. Cars featured on the rally range from million-dollar luxury vehicles to VW campers and even ice cream trucks.
The first Gumball 3000 took place in 1999, when British Gumball creator Maximillion Cooper invited 50 of his friends to take part in a 3000 mile Rally around Europe. Eight years later, Gumball has consistently hit the headlines as “Cool Britannia’s” most unique addition to pop culture, and famed for its exploits and celebrity participation. Each year the event attracts stars including Oscar winner Adrien Brody, Kill Bills Daryl Hannah, Jackass’ Johnny Knoxville, action sports legends Tony Hawk Bam Margera, Travis Pastrana and Carey Hart, and rock stars including Snoop Dogg, The Happy Mondays Bez, The Darkness, Placebo, Blink 182’s Travis Barker, Goldie, Jamiroquai and even Ms Minogue, driving everything from Ferrari Enzo’s and Bugatti Veyrons to Rolls Royce Phantoms and even a humble Ice Cream van!
The 2006 rally is an eight-day, 3000-mile drive across three continents with a goal of uniting nations through a common passion for music, fashion, film and the motorcar.
Following Phileas Fogg’s quest to traverse the world in 80 days back in 1872, the 8th annual ‘Gumball 3000’ Rally decided to follow suit and undertake its most ambitious route ever, with a 3000-mile adventure around the world, starting in London and finishing just 8 days later in Los Angeles!

Not unlike survival mode, Gumball 3000 transforms society’s elite into cunning and crafty drivers of some of the world’s most expensive, unusual and fastest cars. And that’s just during the day. Night after night, their unnerving efforts are rewarded with private parties. Each day (and night) creates countless memories for these drivers to share with each other and even sometimes, the media.
Gumball 3000’s first rally in 1999 featured Beverly Hills 90210 sweetheart, Jason Priestly, in a compromising position. Caught speeding at 170 mph, Priestly was pulled over by police. Using his Gumball reflexes, however, Jason cleverly exchanged an autograph for his freedom.
In 2002’s rally across the United States, a Gumball car was pulled over by the police. To appease the cops, the driver exchanged a ride in his car for an excused ticket. The Gumballer was delighted as the speedometer reached 206 mph with the officer in the passenger seat.
During Gumball 3000, celebrity drivers often take a backseat to their cars. Last year alone, almost $29 million worth of machinery made appearances in the rally. The range of vehicles, through the years, is equally as impressive: From high-end luxury to the environmentally friendly, each vehicle brings additional star power to the Gumball 3000.
