The brand-new, W223-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class debuted in early September, but the German company showcased only the regular models so far. Both AMG and Maybach versions are underway, but we might not seem them in the metal before 2021. However, this rendering of the AMG S63 sedan gives us a first look at the company's upcoming performance sedan.
The upcoming Mercedes-AMG S63 won't look overly aggressive
This rendering is basically a regular S-Class with some changes to the bumper and black trim, but it's actually an accurate representation of the upcoming four-door.
The same will happen around back, where only the exhaust pipes and the black trim will help it stand out compared to the regular S-Class. As for the sides, look for black window and side skirt trim and carbon-fiber mirror caps, just like in this rendering.
The upcoming Mercedes-AMG S63 will go hybrid
The full-size will continue to utilize the twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 engine from AMG, but it will be paired to an electric motor mounted in the rear. The combo is said to deliver nearly 700 horsepower, an almost 100-horsepower increase over the old S63. Torque should jump to almost 800 pound-feet versus the old model's 664-pound-feet rating.
This version will be replaced by the S73e. Also powered by the 4.0-liter V-8, the S73e will feature a more powerful electric motor that will increase total output to a little over 800 horsepower. For reference, the old AMG S65 cranks out 621 horses. This model should also deliver more than 900 pound-feet of torque, a big increase from the previous 738 pound-feet.
Both hybrids are expected to arrive with 20-kWh battery packs, but there's no word as to how many miles they will be able to travel on electric power alone.
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is already available in six versions
The newly unveiled S-Class is available with a choice of six different drivetrains. On the gasoline front, things kick off with the S450 4Matic, powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It also features a 48-volt system that adds 21 horses and 184 pound-feet. Next up is the S500 4Matic, powered by the same combo, but with the inline-six mill rated at 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of twist. The S580 4Matic, also equipped with the 48-volt system, features a 4.0-liter V-8 that's good for 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of twist.
When it comes to diesels, Mercedes-Benz offers a 2.9-liter inline-six in two flavors. The S350d comes with 282 horsepower and 443 pound-feet on tap, while the S400d cranks out 326 horses and 516 pound-feet of torque. Finally, there's the S580e plug-in hybrid combing a 3.0-liter V-6 gas engine and an electric motor. The V-6 delivers 362 horses and 369 pound-feet, while the motor adds an extra 121 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque.
