Subaru just confirmed plans to launch a new S version of the WRX STI in 2019. Not surprisingly, it will be called the S209, but the really big news is that it will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show on January 14, 2019. Yes, it will be the first S series WRX to be sold in the United States.

Unfortunately, Subaru didn't have much to say about the S209, and the teaser photo doesn't reveal much beyond the front grille and the badge. But we do know from a previous video that the S209 has a more aggressive body thanks to a new front splitter, front bumper canards, wider fenders, and a revised rear wing. We also know that it will ride on Subaru's iconic gold wheels.

Under the hood, the S209 should be similar to its predecessors. Expect upgraded turbochargers and revised internals, which should result in a bit of extra horsepower. Handling should be better too thanks to updated dampers and steering. Bigger Brembo brakes will help the compact come to a halt quicker than usual.

If the past is any indication, the S209 will be sold in limited quantities. Subaru produced only 300 units of the 206 and 450 units of the S208, so don't expect more than 500 examples. This will be a global figure though, so the U.S. market might get less than 300. If you want one, make sure you act quick and place an order as soon as it goes on sale.
