More than 50 years after going out of business, Hispano Suiza is poised to make a comeback in the auto industry with a new electric car that’s scheduled to debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Not much is known about the model, at least except for shadowy teaser that showcases retro-styled arches that harken back to some of the brand’s most famous works in the early part of the previous century. More details about the new Hispano Suiza electric supercar should come to light in the days and weeks leading up to the Geneva Motor Show this coming March.

The Spanish Luxury Brand Making A Comeback

The Spanish automaker hasn’t been around for more than 50 years, even if it actually feels longer than that. But don’t make the mistake of dismissing the automaker as a has-been, either. Back in its day, the Barcelona-based marquee was a proud contemporary of Bugatti and Rolls-Royce. It built some of the most luxurious cars to hit the market in those times, including classics like the 1912 Alfonso XIII and the 1934 H6B Million-Guiet Dual-Cowl Phæton. It had a slightly different name then — Hispano-Suiza — but its status as one of the premier auto brands of its generation comes with zero doubt.

Unfortunately, the company had a tumultuous history that forced the company to go under in the ’60’s. It had a French aviation division that has continued to operate under a string of parent companies, but the automotive arm of the company hasn’t been seen in a long time. There have been a few efforts to revive the brand since, most recently in 2010 when it presented an Audi R8-based supercar at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. But for the most part, Hispano Suiza has stayed in the shadows, reduced to being talked about in whispers and hushed tones.

That’s expected to change at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show when the company that now calls itself Hispano Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles S.A — it’s spearheaded by Miguel Suqué Mateu, the great-grandson of company founder Daniel Mateu — unveils its first-ever all-electric supercar. “Back in 1900, when Hispano Suiza started, it built the first electric car in the world, but the prototype was never industrially manufactured,” Miguel Mateu said in a statement announcing the company’s return. “Now, 119 years later, in March 2019, Hispano Suiza has its first 100% electric car, offering great performance and manufactured in Barcelona, the realization of my great grandfather’s dream.”

It’s certainly an interesting teaser, one that we’re looking forward to seeing take center stage at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
