After just three years on the market, the fourth-generation Ford Super Duty has been issued a commanding update, the most noticeable of which comes in the form of an updated 6.7-liter, Turbodiesel, V-8 that now delivers 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque right off the production line without the need for any upgrades. This positions the Ford Super Duty at the top of its class in terms of power and torque, towing capacity, and payload capacity. So what is the Ford Super Duty capable of now?

How Much Can the 2020 Ford Super Duty Tow?

If you are working with a conventional hitch, the 2020 Ford Super Duty can now haul 24,200 pounds while gooseneck towing has increased to an astounding 37,000 pounds with fifth-wheel towing ranking in at 32,500 pounds. To put that into perspective, the Ram 2500 can haul just 19,780 pounds, and the Silverado 2500 can haul just 15,400 pounds. The Ram 3500 is capable of 35,100 pounds, 1,900 pounds shy of the 2020 Ford Super Duty, while the Silverado 3500 falls incredibly short in this competition at just 23,100 pounds.

To top all this off, the 2020 Ford Super Duty can now carry up to 7,850 pounds of payload, 500 pounds more than the Ram 3500 with the 6.4-liter HEMI and 1,738 pounds more than the Silverado 3500 that can carry 6,112 pounds at best.

2020 Ford Super Duty: A New Gasoline Engine and Standard Safety Tech

In addition to the upgraded 6.7-Liter diesel, the Super Duty can now be equipped with a 7.3-liter, gasoline V-8 that’s good for 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. It joins the 6.2-liter Boss V-8 as a second available option. This comes in line with Pro Trailer Backup Assist as optional equipment and, if you get the XLT trim or better, you’ll get a host of active safety equipment like Lane-Keep alert, pre-collision assist, automatic emergency braking, and the like.

Final Thoughts

There are no other real updates to discuss for the Ford Super Duty, but you have to admit that Ford isn’t taking any chances when it comes to keeping up with and beating the competition. Right now, it sits well above both Ram and Chevy in terms of heavy-duty capability, and I’m curious to see what both automakers can do to keep ford from holding onto the crown for too long. Things could get quite interesting over the next few years.
