The Tesla Cybertruck broke cover with a big bang. A strange-looking truck on the outside, Tesla's howler promises to tear down the competition and Elon Musk claims that pricing will start below the $40,000 mark. If you dig the design, the Cybertruck sounds like a dream come true. But there's at least one mystery surrounding this vehicle: how much power output will it actually offer? Well, rumor has it that the range-topping Cybertruck might have around 800 horsepower and could even feature the same technology as the Model S Plaid - that will make it the most powerful Tesla in production.

The Tesla Cybertruck Debuts New Drivetrains Technology

What we do know so far is that the Cybertruck will be offered in three versions.

The range will begin with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive truck. It will have at least 250 miles of range, it will hit 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, and it will be able to tow up to 7,500 pounds. The electric motor in this truck will probably be a revised version of the rear motor found in the Model S Long Range AWD. Expect it to generate at least 400 horsepower but not more than 500 horses.

The mid-range model will be a dual-motor AWD truck. It will deliver at least 300 miles of range, it will hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and tow up to 10,000 pounds. Both, of course, re-tuned for the truck. The source estimates total output at around 690 horsepower and 824 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, there will be a range-topping Cybertruck with a tri-motor AWD layout. . It will also have the highest top speed at 130 mph. The three-motor configuration is actually Tesla's highly anticipated Plaid drivetrain, which will make it into other models as well. The Roadster 2.0 is the first that comes to mind. Output will surely exceed that of the Model S Performance, currently rated at 794 horsepower and 1,013 pound-feet of twist.

How will the tri-motor layout work, you ask? Well, it's actually pretty simple. Instead of the usual motor-per-axle layout, the Cybertruck will employ one unit in the front and two motors on the rear axle, one for each rear wheel. This should also provide better on-demand torque distribution and could, in theory, even facilitate better handling compared to any other Tesla model on the road today.
