Drag racing trucks is “the thing” these days. We have seen trucks of all sizes go up against their similarly-sized competitors. But, how would a drag race between two trucks that are at the opposite end of the spectrum fare? The folks at TFL decided to check it out by bringing in two vastly different pickup trucks from the same stable. One is the Ford Ranger with the turbocharged EcoBoost engine, and the other one is the huge F-250 Tremor. The F-250 comes with a massive V-8 engine and a four-digit torque figure, but it is also a super heavy truck and weighs a lot more than the Ranger. Does it have enough to beat the much lighter and peppier Ranger?

Both Trucks Are On Heavy Steroids

The Ranger is one of the peppiest trucks in its segment. Power is sent to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. This truck is also equipped with the FX4 Off-Road package. This package includes:

-* Terrain Management System With Four Drivable Modes

-* Electronic Locking Rear Differentials

-* Trail Control Cruise Control For Off-Road

-* Off-road Tuned Monotube Shocks

-* All-terrain Tires

-* Undercarriage Skid Plates

The Ford F-250 alongside is well-equipped.. It is the Lariat trim and equipped with the Ultimate package, the Black package, and the Tremor Off-Road package. Power is sent to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Tremor package adds:

- Off-road Tuned Front and Rear Suspension

- Front Limited Slip Differential

- Off-Road Shock Dampers

- 35-inch Maximum Traction Tires

- Rock Crawl and Trail Control Mode

Is The Heavy F-250 Quick Off The Line?

Although these specs are impressive, this F-250 is almost 3,000 pounds heavier than the Ranger. And, for a drag race, all you need is the initial momentum and how quick it is off the line. But, with 1,050 pound-feet of torque, the F-250 can be a monster in Usain Bolt’s shoes. In the first test, the F-250 Termor’s Traction Control and AdvanceTrac were turned off for a raw, slightly uncivilized launch. It was slotted into the Normal drive mode since there is no Sport mode. The Ranger, on the other hand, went all guns blazing in the Sport mode. Both the trucks went in with the two-wheel-drive configuration for the first round. Although the Ranger was quick off the line, it didn’t take the Tremor long to go past the Ranger and whisk it off at the finish line.

For the next round, the F-250 Super Duty was slotted into four-wheel-drive High mode. The same result this time around, too, but the F-250 touched the finish line with an even bigger margin. The guys decided to check out the 0-60 mph time of the Super Duty Tremor in different modes. In the two-wheel-drive, this heavy beast sprinted to the mark in 6.75 seconds! In the four-wheel-drive high mode, it surprisingly took 7.19 seconds. Impressive figures, nonetheless.

Final Thoughts

It’s fun to see two trucks, quite different from each other in terms of size, flex their engines in a drag race. Although this dash doesn’t put one down and the other over the top, it did prove that trucks can be fast monster if you push them hard; and, that can be a scary sight in your rear-view mirror.
