What You Need to Know About the 2020 Toyota Supra

Looks aside, the 2020 Toyota Supra is quite the performer. Until the four-cylinder Toyota Supra arrives in North America you’ll only find that BMW-sourced 3.0-liter inline-six under the hood. Toyota reports that it’s good for some 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, but two different independent tests, one ran by Motor Trend and the other by Car & Driver, have shown considerably more power than expected at the wheels. There’s been no word on how the real power ratings affect performance, but Toyota promises a 4.1-second sprint to 60 mph, so it’s not exactly a slouch anyway.

If you’re someone that’s looking forward to modding the Supra – and, it’s okay if you are as we practically live for that kind of thing – then that BMW powertrain comes with huge advantages. First, BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six has been worked over seven ways to Sunday a number of times. There’s even a Supra-specific program available that will let you revamp the ECU to boost output to as high as 420 horsepower – nearly 100 more than stock. Swapping out the exhaust for something aftermarket will give you even more oomph and, together, you can probably get the sprint time down intpo the 3.5-3.6 second range.

On that note, you should keep in mind that early reports suggest the Supra’s weak points include the rear differential and the axle shafts, so be prepared for disaster if you go too far before aftermarket solutions are made available. There’s also a video of someone tuning the 3.0-liter to 1,000 horsepower but it’s a little more in-depth than a simple ECU tune and very time consuming. We’re still not sure how well the Supra’s stock driveline handled that built, but we’re guessing it wouldn’t go very well.
