GM is once again toying with the idea of autonomous cars by envisioning an interior that at first sight looks like the ultimate man cave where two dudes could play their favorite console games while the vehicle handles all the real-life driving. Which is cute, but kind of a stretch and far from feasible for the time being.

Let us get one thing out of the way: years, or possible decades will pass before the world witnesses autonomous cars in the truly sense of the concept. Why? Because there are so many factors at play that are not even close from being ironed out – think about the technology itself, regulations, road adaptation, and moral/legal responsibility in case of an accident.

However, this has not stopped carmakers from cheekily referring to some driver assistance functions as “autonomous” or even pick misleading names such as Tesla’s Autopilot. Of course, GM has the Super Cruise hands-free driver-assist system which first launched in 2017 on the now-dead Cadillac CT6 and it has been recently updated to support automatic lane-changing maneuvers (already available in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade).

Apart from a non-misleading nomenclature, Super Cruise uses high-definition maps, sensors, and in-car monitoring that determines whether the driver is paying attention or not. This means that holding the steering wheel is optional, but you must be constantly alert to what is happening around the car. So, where does a gaming rig fit in this context?

Presumably, GM will continue to improve Super Cruise to the point where it evolves to Level 4 or Level 5 autonomy. Only then and with the right infrastructure would a gaming console make sense inside a car. Yes, the sketch in question looks good and according to @generalmotorsdesign’s post on Instagram, it was penned down by @darbymx5, and not the carmaker’s design department.

And to answer the original question in the caption, yes, we would love to hit the countryside in Forza Horizon during a long commute, but then again, why dwell on something that’s decades from becoming a reality?
