Regular people like to work on their hobbies once the 9-to-5 program is over and done with. Not the industrious folks over at Toyota’s Takaoka plant in Japan. No, sir. There, 200 members of the staff decided to use their off-hours time to put together this Toyota RAV4 limo.

Not an aftermarket outfit, but a pure Toyota creation

Given how many car niches exist today and how some of them are making a comeback - yes, pickup trucks, I’m looking at you - the sight of a stretched RAV4 might be categorized as normal. Except it’s not, not when Toyota lets 200 of its own employees work on it in one of its factories.

According to Motor1 (quoting Japanese outlet Car Watch), the stretched RAV4 measures 26 feet in length and its entire build process took the better part of four months.

Now, looking at it from the outside, it’s pretty clear that visually, the final product could have been better. Just take a look at the lower side profile - there’s something wacky in the way it’s been redesigned.

Nonetheless, the same source says the stretch job confers 32 extra inches worth of space in the rear, which is not bad. And, there's still not a third-row of seats, either. so we guess the engineers got the structural rigidity and integrity right.

In case you’re curious to know the reasons behind the existence of this mutated RAV4, it turns out that the people over at Toyota’s Takaoka facility like a good challenge. Plus, it looks like they had a ton of fun building it.

That said, don’t hold your breath on Toyota actually selling this sort of body style anytime soon. Still, re-watching the video made this peculiar RAV4 grow on us.
