The Fast & Furious franchise is becoming a staple in the news again, only this time, Netflix and the opportunity to binge-watch all eight movies in the franchise are what’s making waves. Turns out that the streaming service has announced that it will be removing the first three movies of the blockbuster franchise from its library on September 1. The move, while disappointing, isn’t unexpected. Netflix routinely takes down older movies to give way to new titles that are going to be added to the library. It just so happened that The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift are all on the chopping block. With this in mind, now’s as good a time as any to hop on to Netflix and spend the next few days binge-watching the whole franchise before that opportunity is lost by next week. Fast 9 doesn’t arrive until May 2020 anyway, and if you haven’t seen Hobbs and Shaw by now, then you probably need to watch that, too.
The Fast & Furious franchise is the gift that keeps on giving. Its availability on Netflix means that anyone can watch all eight movies at any given time. But that’s going to change come September when the streaming service drops the first three movies of the blockbuster franchise from its library. It’s not a surprising move given Netflix’s business model. It has to give way to new movies by dropping old titles, even if said old titles are movies that are part of a blockbuster franchise like Fast & Furious. So enjoy The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift for as long as they last on Netflix.
As disappointing as it is to hear that the ability to watch the entire franchise in one sitting would have its legs cut from underneath it, there is some good news for all of us Fast & Furious diehards.
Production of the movie is ongoing and we’re already getting a few sneak peeks at what we can expect out of it, including the respective additions of the 2020 Toyota GR Supra and a heavily customized old-school Dodge Charger. Both vehicles were recently spotted on the set movie and that was enough for everyone to start speculating on who’s going to be driving each car in Fast 9. For what it’s worth, we all know that Vin Diesel will be behind the wheel of the souped-up Charger. That’s Fast & Furious, if there’s such a thing. The driver of the Supra is a bit of a mystery at this point, but we believe that it’s going to be Jordan Brewster, whose character, Mia Toretto, is the wife of the late Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor. If you don’t know why the Walker is connected to the Supra, maybe now’s the time to go back and watch the first movie of the franchise, The Fast and the Furious.
The Fast and the Furious plot is also unclear at this point, though given what we know about the franchise, nothing’s too bombastic for these movies. The last three franchise movies — 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and Fast & Furious have taken absurdity levels to new levels with each succeeding movie, culminating in the franchise’s latest offering — and first-ever spin-off — Fast 9. If you haven’t seen the spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, you need to know that genetically enhanced people are part of the franchise now. There’s no corner of the sci-fi universe that the franchise isn’t afraid to tap into, so if Fast 9 ends up with Dominic Toretto and his crew driving in space — yes, that’s impossible, but not in this world — don’t say we didn’t give you a proper heads-up.
In any event, expect big things out of Fast 9. That’s always been the case with movies from this franchise.
What’s important is that the Fast 9’s franchise is dominating our news cycles once again.
But in the event that you’re actually down with the binge-watching experience and you have nothing left to watch, go give Furious 6 a shot. It’s also on Netflix and it’s executive-produced by none other than Charlize Theron. She’s a part of the Fast 7, too.
