With the growing market popularity of Toyota’s performance division, Gazoo Racing, it is inevitable that the carmaker extends its product line with all the performance goodies. What if the upcoming Toyota car to receive the GR treatment is a Camry? A recent report from Motor Trend claims that Toyota has mysterious gifts for all of us, and we are asked to “stay tuned”.

Except for the mid-size sedan market, Toyota’s GR division has been sprinkling its talent into almost all the Toyota car segments. Starting with the two-door coupe category, the GR Supra with a manual gearbox and the GR 86 are nothing but monsters on both track and road. The recently launched GR Corolla, which has a 1.6-liter engine with 300 horsepower, is madness. So if the brand is considering exploring the current Toyota lineup a bit more, what could be its next adventure? A four-door sedan? A Camry?

Bob Carter, the Executive Vice President of Toyota, in an interview with Motor Trend, has not confirmed anything on the Camry, but instead, he told us to “stay tuned”. Now, we are no mind readers, but it could also be the sedan version of the Corolla, which might benefit the subsequent GR treatment.

But, we think it is the Camry because, unlike the Corolla sedan, it is available in a performance trim with a TRD badge. The trim is powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V-6 with 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. An all-wheel-drive system is also available as an option. Other sportier enhancements with an aerodynamic body kit, bigger 19-inch wheels, bespoke suspension tuning, and sports exhaust. So the Camry has a vast potential for GR treatment.

If a GR Camry is coming in the future, it wouldn’t be powered by a 1.6-liter 300-horsepower inline-three engine, not that it is incapable, but the added weight of the mid-size sedan might not be ideal. So instead, we can expect the 3.5-liter V-6 to house a turbocharger for improved performance.

If this is true, the Camry will face the top dogs of the mid-size performance sedan market: the Kia K5 GT, the Hyundai Elantra N, and the upcoming Honda Civic Type R. Features like more aggressive bodywork, enhanced suspension, better handling dynamics, and even upgraded brakes are all on the table.

Toyota is also looking forward to the future of GR by adding EVs to the lineup. The vice president of product planning and strategy, Cooper Ericksen, has quoted:

Toyota’s first mass-produced EV, the bZ4X, is predicted to be the first EV to receive the GR livery and the performance goodies, as it was teased earlier in 2022. We shall wait until 2023 to hear more about the future of Toyota and Gazoo Racing.
