Rumors of a production version of the Infiniti->ke36 Emerg-E are nothing new. As a matter of fact, those started buzzing as early as 2012, months after the hybrid->ke147 supercar appeared at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. To this day, the Emerg-E hasn't made an appearance in showrooms yet, but that doesn't mean it wont in the future, at least if Infiniti has its way.

Speaking with Auto Express, Nissan->ke62 vice-president Andy Palmer expressed optimism that Infiniti still has space in its lineup for the Emerg-E. There's still a lot work that needs to be done before that happens, including the design execution of the supercar->ke177. Still, there's enough reason to believe that with more and more markets angling for efficient exotic models, the Emerg-E could very well "emerge" as a future Infiniti halo car.

Likewise, profitability is another important barometer that could determine the production future of the Emerg-E. Simply put, the model has to make sense from a business standpoint. If Infiniti loses money with every Emerg-E model sold, then it's not a good business decision.

Being able to justify the Emerg-E as a model that will be a financial hit for Infiniti is arguably the most important hurdle the company has to overcome. If Infiniti believes it can clear that, then the Emerg-E could be headed to dealerships sooner than later.

Why It Matters

There are a lot of things that need to be ironed out before we see a production version of the Infiniti Emerg-E. The important thing is none of these hurdles appear to be of the "moving mountains" variety. If Nissan's premier brand can navigate its way around them, then we can all be a step closer to seeing the hybrid supercar in dealerships soon.

Infiniti has made incredible strides reinventing its lineup in recent years -- the Q50 Eau Rouge is a perfect example of that -- so anything's in play for the company these days. Here's to hoping Inifiniti makes it happen one more time.

Infiniti Emerg-E

First introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the Infiniti Emerg-E was presented as a highly advanced hybrid supercar that, at that time, showed Infiniti in a new light. Since then, the company has made great strides in that department, making it even more feasible that a production Emerg-E could be in the cards in the future.

For now, though, all we have is the concept version, which by itself by comes with an aggressive design language that's also packed with plenty of new technology.

The Emerge-E is powered by twin electric motors that develop a total of 402 horsepower. It will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just four seconds and from zero to 130 mph in 30 seconds.
