Barring the unexpected, the 2018 Paris Motor Show will play host to the production-ready Infiniti Q60 Black S hybrid. The performance coupe first entered our lives at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and in the year since its unveiling, Infiniti has fine-tuned it into becoming the what it claims as the first “accessible road car with up-to-date Formula One technology." It’s not clear yet if the automaker plans to approve the car for production, though if it did, it’s going to look like the model that we’ll be seeing in Paris later this year.

Everything about the Infiniti Q60 Black S sounds impressive. It features a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that already produces 400 horsepower on its own. Combine that with an F1-sourced energy recovery system that’s good for 100 horsepower of its own, and you have a car that can produce a total of 500 horsepower. The two motor-generator units also function independently from one another, each generating power in their own unique way. One of them, called the MGU-K, harvests power under braking while the other, called the MGU-H, feeds off the heat energy that comes from out of the exhaust gases. The energy harvested by the motor generators are stored in high-rate lithium-ion batteries where they can be deployed to serve a number of functions, including helping rotate the crankshaft and turbocharger turbine blades more quickly. It’s all F1 tech stuff that Infiniti was able to include in the car with the help of the Renault Sport Formula One team. Or, as Infiniti describes it, the Q60 Black S is “a production car with Formula One-inspired performance hybrid technology would benefit from greater power and torque, and instant, lag-free acceleration.”

It all sounds great, and the car looks incredible, too. But the most important question surrounding the Q60 Black S has yet to be answered. Will Infiniti actually decide to produce it, even in limited quantities?

We don’t have the answer to that question yet. A decision will likely be made sometime this year, and if it goes according to our hopes and dreams, we could see the Q60 Black S hit dealerships sometime in 2020.

For now, look for Infiniti to keep refining the Q60 Black S ahead of its Paris unveiling. Just hope and pray that when all is said and done, Infiniti doesn’t spend all this time and effort on the car and then decides to not build it. We’ve seen that song and dance number before with the Q50 Eau Rouge a few years ago.

We’re still a little emotionally scarred over not seeing the Q50 Eau Rouge after we expect to see it get green-lit for production. We can’t have too many heartbreaks, Infiniti. Give us the Q60 Black S, and we’ll forgive you for keeping the Q50 Eau Rouge away from us.
