When Ferrari unveiled the Portofino M we thought that its work with the Portofino was done. However, Youtube user Varryx just proved us wrong: it caught a camouflaged Portofino prototype testing on the Modena streets.

Despite the camouflage, is pretty obvious that the car is very much identical to a standard Portofino. The only difference is the new set of wheels that seems to have been taken from the Roma. So, what exactly does this mean? What is Ferrari doing?

It is of course too early to speculate, but there could be a few answers to these questions. The first possibility is that Ferrari is preparing a Handling Speciale Package for the entry-level Portofino. You know like we have seen on the California T, or further in the past on the 599 GTB.

The next possibility is that Ferrari is preparing an even more powerful version of the Portofino. But that's kind of wild since the twin-turbo, 3.9-liter V-8 engine delivers a total of 611 horsepower on the M version - up from the 592 horsepower delivered by the base Portofino. So, maybe a 700 horsepower Portofino is coming? Will Ferrari risk to put it so close to the F8 Tributo?

And the third possibility is that we are just looking at a mule for the next generation Portofino - a model rumored to offer a hybrid V-6 powertrain.

But what exactly this is only time will tell! So stay tuned!
