Is The BMW i4 Worthy Enough To Be The Tesla Model 3 Killer?

Doug DeMuro takes a closer look at the quirks and features of the Bavarian automaker’s latest performance EV

In his latest video, Doug DeMuro got to check out the new BMW i4 M50, which is supposedly the Bavarian automaker’s all-electric take on the 4 Series Gran Coupe. As with any Doug video, this is an in-depth tour of the first-ever all-electric BMW to be given the full M treatment. Granted this is an M Sport model rather than an out and out M, but with 536 horsepower on tap, I don’t see anyone complaining.

It’s no surprise that with that the i4 M50 is aimed squarely at the Tesla Model 3 Performance. The Polestar 2 was yet another noteworthy model that also goes up against the Tesla. Coming back to how the i4 stacks up against the Model 3 (457 horsepower), while it is more powerful as opposed to the Tesla, the Model 3 has a considerably longer range at 315 miles as opposed to the BMW’s 270 miles.

Another way to distinguish a BMW i Model, from its gas-powered car’s is the blue rings that surround the BMW logo

Being an EV, in order to make for the lack of exhaust, BMW has gone pretty beserk with the rear diffuser situation

Doug also pointed out that these 90s-style door handles seem to be making a comeback. Very strange indeed

Interior Highlights
Stepping inside, what almost immediately grabs your attention is the massive screen that takes center stage

Two screens are contained within this single seamless panel mounted on the dash. You’ll also find that this panel is ever so slightly pointed towards the driver, a BMW hallmark

The infotainment screen is running the latest Drive 8 software and has a vast app library. You can interact with it through voice, touch, the iDrive controller and gesture control

As with the exterior, the blue highlights continue onto the interior as well. Pushing down on the starter button plays a true sci-fi tone, which is surreal. It might take some getting used to

But thankfully, it’s not all screens, and BMW has left a few buttons for the radio and drive modes

Out on the road, Doug was particularly impressed by how quick and responsive the drive assist features are. He also noted that the heads-up display also displays audio information, a nice touch indeed

Rear Seat Situation
Moving to the rear, Doug notes that legroom is pretty tight and the sloping roofline doesn’t help either

Cargo Area
Finally, he takes a look at the cargo area. It is decent. While there is more room under the flat floor, it is occupied by this audio component part of the stereo system

Missed Opportunities
He also notes that the rear footwell has a hump in the floor and there is no extra storage under the hood or frunk. Not what you’d expect from an EV

So the i4 M50 is a Model 3 killer? It does have more power at 536 hp, it costs more than the Tesla and has a lesser range at just 270 miles as opposed to the Model 3’s 315 miles
