This front-engined Ferrari has got the performance, but what about long-distance comfort?

You’d think the Ferrari 812 Superfast has been turned over its every side by pretty much all the car journos that matter at the moment and you’d be right. However, Harry Metcalfe of Harry’s Garage wanted to see if the super-fast Superfast can be used as a good old grand tourer, as Ferrari claims. Hence this 35-minute experiment transposed into a YouTube video.

The 812 is nice to drive, but it’s not a flawless GT, mind you

Ferrari argues that the 812 Superfast guarantees "the superb comfort on longer trips that is the signature of a genuine Grand Tourer berlinetta." Starting from that statement, Harry Metcalfe wanted to give the 812 a run for its grand tourer money so he ended up travelling to Provence, France, chugging in almost 1,000 miles in the process behind the wheel of the Prancing Horse.

Now, Harry Metcalfe is the definition of a cultured car journalist, so we tend to take for granted everything he says about a particular car. Unsurprisingly, he gives out an honest opinion about the 812 Superfast’s ability to handle long-distance trips without wearing down the passengers as well as some of the supercar’s quirks that aren’t exactly comfort inducing or luxury-oriented.

From the off, Mr. Metcalfe admits that there’s "no chance of falling asleep in this car" simply because the Italians tweaked the 812 Superfast in such a way that it feels like a race car. He, is, however, impressed by the range you get on a full fuel tank, which is way above what he expected from a naturally-aspirated V-12 from Ferrari.

That said, do watch the video. It’s equally and educational experience and a guide of sorts that will give you a few tips in case you plan to travel (in style) to the south of France.

Tudor’s first encounter with cars took place when he was only a child. Back then, his father brought home a Trabant 601 Kombi and a few years later, a Wartburg 353. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read More
