Audi has once again been caught testing a high-riding version of the A3 with slightly wider fenders and a subdued black compared to the last prototype that was seen on public roads. It appears to be a plug-in hybrid just like the last prototype, which suggests this may not be an “Allroad” model and actually a “Citycarver” model instead. The big difference? The any Audi Allroad model comes with AWD, and so far there’s no plug-in version of the A3 that’s AWD.

If this is an Allroad model, it’ll get the full treatment. That includes the Allroad-specific front and rear fascias, off-road capable side skirts, and plastic cladding all the way around to keep the body safe during light off-roading. The other thing to point out is that Audi only sells the A3 Sedan in America, so whatever this high-riding A3 turns out to be, there’s a good chance we won’t be seeing it Stateside.

If this is, in fact, a City Carver, it will benefit from the same powertrain offered in the A3 45 TFSI e, which combines a 1.4-liter engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 242 horsepower. But, as I said before, it’s only sent to the front wheels. The good news is that the high-riding Audi A3 will probably be revealed by the end of 2022, so we don’t have too long to wait.
