There are car crashes, physics-defying action sequences, and enough mentions of “family” to make you wonder how far the franchise has come since the first movie hit theaters 20 years ago. The movie’s release has been delayed numerous times — blame the pandemic for that — but it is scheduled to release on May 28. Cross your fingers it doesn’t get pushed back again.

The new Fast 9 trailer starts with the obligatory reminder of the importance of family in the franchise. We get to see Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) with their son Brian. Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) are also seen hanging out with Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), followed by a shot of Han (Sung Kang) and Sean (Lucas Black) reuniting for the first time since Tokyo Drift. All’s good in the familia, right? Not really.

The trailer turns more high-paced as we see multiple shots of action-packed sequences that have become a staple of the franchise. There’s a shot of police cars flying through the air, a motor bike chase in the woods, cars fleeing a building that’s about to collapse. The coup de grâce, though, is a four-second shot of a Toyota 86 going sideways through an establishment that looks like a bar and then impaling a box truck on the next street. It’s nuts in every way imaginable, which, if you think about it, is part for the course when it comes to this movie franchise.

The new trailer is only 30 seconds long; it’s a far cry from the three-minute trailer that debuted at last year’s Super Bowl and gave away pretty much all the interesting plot points of the movie. It is interesting, too, that John Cena’s character, Jacob Toretto, isn’t prominently featured in this new spot — he appears for a brief second looking all mean — as is Cipher (Charlize Theron), whose only appearance comes in the form of her winking at someone.

On the bright side, Queenie (Dame Helen Mirren) also makes an appearance, and it seems she knows her way around cars, too. A shot of a Noble M600 doing a ridiculously cool J-turn happens in the middle of the trailer, followed by a laughing Queenie that seemingly implies that she’s behind the wheel of the M600.

The new trailer is a must-watch for fans of the Fast & Furious franchise. We’ve waited longer than we thought for Fast 9 to arrive, but it looks like it’s finally headed our way.
