It’s Official: Tesla Model S Plaid Has Broken The Porsche Taycan’s Nürburgring Record!!

The Model S Plaid broke Taycan’s record by 12 seconds to snatch its crown

The Tesla Model S Plaid has been spied at the Nürburgring numerous times in the past and the only logical explanation was it attempting to break the record for the fastest production EV. Now, the cat’s out of the bag. Elon Musk tweeted to confirm that the Model S Plaid has officially set a new record, dethroning the Porsche Taycan and beating its record by a margin of 12 seconds!

All Hail The Tesla Model S Plaid!

Porsche had set the record for the fastest production EV at the Nürburgring back in August 2019. The record was set by the Taycan Turbo when it lapped the ring in seven minutes and 42 seconds. Musk now tweeted that the Model S Plaid – completely stock – has officially set a new record.

The first run was completed in 7:30.909 minutes with an average speed of 103.34 mph (166.320 kph), and the second run in 7:35.579 minutes with an average speed of 102.29 mph (164.614 kph).

Two Years In The Making…

It has dethroned the Porsche Taycan Turbo which held the record for the fastest production EV since August 2019

Tesla’s official attempt comes two years after Porsche Taycan Turbo set the fastest production EV record, but that doesn’t mean the automaker wasn’t active there. In fact, Tesla was quite aggressive about it and wanted to sit on the throne. A month after Porsche set the record, Tesla tweeted that it can achieve a time of 7:20 minutes, and with some mods, even a time of 7:05 minutes.

By the end of 2019, Tesla managed to beat the Taycan’s record by a whopping 29 seconds! It wasn’t what Tesla has claimed earlier, but a time of 7:13 minutes was very impressive. Since it was an unofficial record, it never made it to the history books, but a time of 7:30.909 is still not bad.

Porsche Could Retaliate Soon

The first run was completed in 7:30.909 minutes (avg. speed - 103.34 mph) and the second run in 7:35.579 minutes (avg. speed - 102.29 mph)

The Taycan that set the record in 2019 was the Turbo trim. Now, the automaker has a quicker, faster, Turbo S as well. 12 seconds seems like something within its reach, so don’t be surprised if Porsche tries to get back on the throne pretty soon. Maybe Musk anticipates this, too, and went on to let everyone know that the Model S Plaid still has room for improvement. He replied to his own tweet saying,

“Next will be modified Plaid with added aero surfaces, carbon brakes & track tires (all things that can be done without Tesla being in the loop)”.

For the uninitiated, the Tesla Model S Plaid comes with some mighty impressive specs:

  • It comes with a tri-motor setup
  • Generates 1,020 horses combined
  • 0-60 mph in 1.99 seconds under ideal conditions
  • Quarter-mile run in 9.23 seconds with a trap speed of 155 mph as per Tesla, but has already done it in 9.081 seconds
  • Top speed of 200 mph
  • World’s most aero-efficient car - Drag coefficient of 0.208
  • EPA-estimated range of 396 miles
  • Supports fast charging up to 250 kW, and can add 187 miles of range in 15 minutes
  • Features an F1-inspired, yoke steering wheel

The Model S Plaid was spotted multiple times at the Nürburgring in the recent past and the only reason could be it attempting a record run

All said and done, we’ll let Tesla bask in its glory until the next chapter of this rivalry unfolds. Watch another video of the record run uploaded on the YouTube channel ‘Touristen Niko’ and share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
