With its 550 horsepower supercharged V-8, the Jaguar F-Type R is a tightly wound ball of kinetic energy. This small, sharply styled coupe does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph. Anyone calling it underpowered has probably been hit in the head with a drywall hammer, but with a reported power figure north of 600 horsepower, the forthcoming F-Type SVR should be even more insane. For reference, the Jaguar XJ220 supercar->ke177 from 1992 made do with a paltry 540 horsepower.

The news comes courtesy of our friends at Motor Trend, who aren’t mentioning any names but suggest the news comes from an anonymous source within Jaguar.->ke39 Though it’s significant, the bump in power isn’t all that surprising. Jaguar’s 5.0-liter V-8 has proven to be a workhorse of an engine, and with a bit more boost from the supercharger and some software reconfiguration, it shouldn’t have any problems putting down over 600 horsepower reliably.

Why it matters

It should translate to some monstrous, 911 Turbo->ke571-rivaling performance. Like all other V-8 F-Types->ke1224 sold in the United States, expect the SVR to get all-wheel-drive and Jaguar’s eight-speed automatic with manual shift mode. Thanks to the additional horsepower, and given the F-Type R’s 0-60 time, the SVR should be able to accomplish the same feat in close to three seconds flat. Top speed will likely be limited to 186 mph.

In addition to 50 extra horsepower, expect Jaguar to throw everything it knows at the SVR, including some choice parts from the ultra-rare F-Type Project 7 roadster. That means carbon-ceramic brakes, active rear differential and track-ready suspension with adaptive dampers. Outside, the SVR will get a full carbon-fiber body kit, including a lower front splitter underneath larger intakes, side skirts, rear diffuser and a sizable rear wing. Both coupe and convertible options seem likely.
