Add Jaguar to the growing list of automakers that have become open to the idea of a full-sized SUV joining its lineup. The British automaker didn’t confirm any specific plans, but it did say that the option is on the table, as long as it doesn’t impede on the territory currently occupied by any of Land Rover’s models. If a full-sized Jaguar SUV does come to fruition, it would be the fourth high-riding vehicle with a Big Cat badge, joining the F-Pace, E-Pace, and the upcoming all-electric I-Pace.

Word of Jag’s interest in a full-sized SUV was revealed by JLR Australia managing director Matthew Wiesner. Speaking with GoAuto, Wiesner indicated that Jaguar is open to the possibility of adding another SUV to its lineup, provided it checks off a few requirements. “All options are on the table, as long as it delivers what Jaguar stands for,” he said. “That’s probably the most important thing.”

Part of delivering what “Jaguar stands for” means creating a vehicle that can satisfy the performance and luxury requirements of the company’s customer base. It wouldn’t make sense for Jag to add another SUV for the sake of adding another SUV. It has to mean something, according to Wiesner.

A full-sized Jaguar SUV should also have an identity of its own that’s independent of the F-Pace, E-Pace, and I-Pace. Fortunately, Jaguar doesn’t have a full-sized SUV on its lineup so it would be easier to slot it in the space between large and upper-large SUV segments, turning it, in a lot of ways, into an SUV version of the XJ luxury sedan.

It’d be great if that were the only thing Jag needs to side-step. But it also has sister brand Land Rover to consider. Even if a full-sized SUV makes sense for Jaguar, it’s also important for the company to develop it as its own, and not step on the toes of any of Land Rover’s models, most importantly, the range-topping Range Rover.

“You don’t need another Range Rover; you don’t need another Land Rover – they’ve got their specific roles to play within the group,” Wiesner said. “Jaguar’s job is to bring dynamic enjoyment from a driving perspective, and if there is a product that we’re missing and an option that is there, it will be investigated.”

Given the success it’s had with the F-Pace and the expected reception the E-Pace and I-Pace will have, it should be a matter of time before we see another Jaguar SUV hit the scene. All Jaguar needs to do is to make sure it has more than just a Big Cat badge on it. It has to be a proper Jaguar.
