The station wagon market is so small in the U.S. than you only need the fingers of one hand to count the grocery getters you can buy. Well, you can cut the Jaguar XF Sportbrake from that list because the British wagon won't be available for 2021. And no, Jaguar didn't axe the model altogether; the XF Sportbrake is being discontinued only in the U.S. The XE compact sedan is also getting axed due to poor sales.

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake is gone after only three years

The XF Sportbrake arrived in the U.S. for the 2018 model year. Jaguar's decision was a bit surprising given that most automakers choose to not offer wagons on North America, but it didn't last long anyway, with the British wagon being retired after only three years.

Jaguar recently revealed the facelifted XF sedan for the U.S. market, but didn't say anything about an updated wagon, which seemed strange given that a European model was revealed in October. But Jaguar quickly confirmed to Roadshow that the wagon will be discontinued after 2020.

Why? Well, the XF isn't a strong seller here in the U.S. Back in 2019, Jaguar said the Sportbrake made up around 20 percent of total XF sales.

That's fewer than 240 wagons sold in 12 months and a good reason to remove it from the inventory.

You can still buy one if you hurry

If you're a fan of wagons, the XF Sportbrake is still available for a little while. Two engines are available, starting with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The second option is the supercharged, 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 380 horses and 332 pound-feet of twist.

Both models are equipped with AWD and automatic transmissions.

Are there other wagons available?

Fortunately, you can still buy a premium wagon in the U.S. after the XF Sportbrake goes away.

Mercedes-Benz still offers the E-Class Wagon, while Audi has both the A4 and A6 wagons on offer. However, all three cars are sold in their crossover-inspired trims, the All-Terrain and Allroad, respectively. For a proper wagon, you need to go for the more expensive Mercedes-AMG E63 Wagon or Audi RS6 Avant models. Volvo also offers a couple of wagons. There's the V90 midsize and the V60 compact and they're both available in SUV-style Cross Country trims if you like more ground clearance and black cladding.

The Jaguar XE is also discontinued for 2021

The automaker explains that the XE is not that much more affordable than the bigger XF, which "offers superior value to entry luxury sedan buyers" through more interior space and more standard equipment.

The decision seems surprising given that the XE outsold the XF by a significant margin from 2016 to 2019. Last year, Jaguar sold 3,551 units of XE, while XF sales came in at only 1,187. As of October 2020, the XE starts from $39,900, while the XF retails from $51100 before options. The XE is Jaguar's alternative for the highly popular BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4.
