If it happens, the so-called J-Pace will sit above the F-Pace in Jag’s SUV pecking order

Jaguar’s plan to launch a bigger SUV to sit above the F-Pace is taking shape. A new report from Autocar reveals that there’s more to the rumor than what we previously thought. Apparently, the model already has a yet-to-be-confirmed name — J-Pace — and a tentative launch timetable of 2021. Once it’s out, the model is expected to sit above the F-Pace and serve as Jag’s flagship SUV.

Jaguar is swimming in the success of its SUV lineup, so we shouldn’t be surprised that the British automaker is looking to add another model to its growing family of sporty people movers

Jaguar is swimming in the success of its SUV lineup, so we shouldn’t be surprised that the British automaker is looking to add another model to its growing family of sporty people movers. The J-Pace is an ideal addition because it’s going to occupy a segment that none of the other Jag SUVs currently occupy. The only point of concern about the model was whether it would step on the toes of the Range Rover. As it turns out, neither Jaguar nor Land Rover are particularly concerned about the possibility because the J-Pace will not only enter the same segment, but it’ll reportedly be based on the Range Rover itself, all-aluminum architecture included.

The J-Pace will be different from the Range Rover in a number of ways, most notably its design. Without going into detail, the Autocar report hinted that the J-Pace will be longer and a teensy bit wider. It’ll also have a more spacious interior and will sit lower to the ground because, well, it’s a Jag. In terms of design, the J-Pace will be the first Jag model to receive a new design language from the automaker’s design maestro, Ian Callum.

The SUV’s engine option will also be based heavily on the Range Rover, including the potential for a plug-in hybrid system

The SUV’s engine option will also be based heavily on the Range Rover, including the potential for a plug-in hybrid system. That said, don’t expect these options to be available from the start. Jag will probably roll them out one at a time to give these engine variants room to breathe on their own.

Jaguar is reportedly also willing to go a little off-book in the SUV’s development. That can be interpreted in a number of different ways, but that was already hinted at by JLR Australia Managing Director Matthew Wiesner, who told GoAuto last week that “all options are on the table, as long as it delivers what Jaguar stands for.”

“Does it deliver on Jaguar’s promise around performance? If it does, it’s on the table,” Wiesner added.

The addition of a full-sized SUV should help round out Jag’s SUV family. It already has the F-Pace, which has become Jaguar’s best-selling model in recent memory after posting around 70,000 sold units in each of the past two years. The smaller E-Pace and all-electric I-Pace are also expected to be hot ticket items. If the J-Pace becomes reality — it’s actually been in Jag’s radar as early as 2015 — it would give the Big Cat all the claws it needs to take a swipe at the competition.
