JDM Drag Race: 495 HP Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 7 Versus 488 HP Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Two modified rally legends go head to head on the drag strip

Whether it’s between stock or modified cars, drag racing is always a good way to pit two (or more) machines against each other. It’s even more epic when said machines are some of the biggest rivals in rallying history. Today’s dose of drag racing comes from the YouTube channel Officially Gassed and is between a modified Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and a modified Subaru Impreza WRX STI with about the same power.

Both cars lay down the 0-60 mph times
The EVO takes 4.03 seconds while the STI takes 3.18 seconds

The Subaru Impreza STI is actually a first-generation wagon, which was never sold in the states. It’s equipped with a forged EJ207 short-block engine, so it’s a 2.0-liter flat-four instead of a 2.5-liter. The flat-four features an SC46 turbocharger, 900 cc injectors, Cosworth head gaskets, APR head studs, RCM parallel fuel lines, a Syvecs ECU, and a lot more (full spec in video description). It’s also mated to a five-speed manual with straight-cut gears, so prepare to hear some racecar noises. The “Subbie” makes 488 horsepower.

The “evil-looking Subaru” is fully blacked out and features an aggressive body kit consisting of flared fenders, lower side skirts, lower front fascia, and a massive rear diffuser. It also features Corbeau racing seats and harnesses, and a stripped interior.

It has a fully-forged EJ20 flat-four engine
It makes 488 hp thanks to an SC46 turbo, 900cc injectors, Syvecs ECU and other upgrades

The Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 7 features a carbon-fiber front end (fenders, bumper, and hood) and a 4G63T, 2.0-liter inline-four engine with a long-rod kit, Weisco pistons, ACL race bearings, a Link ECU, and a lot more (full specs in video description). It also has an HPB IX turbocharger and makes 495 horsepower. The EVO usually runs a full interior, but when the owner heard he was going up against the Impreza, he stripped out everything except the driver seat.

Before going head to head, both cars do a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) run. The EVO 7 goes first and puts down a very respectable 4.03-second time. The Subaru, however, smashes it by laying down a 3.18-second 0 to 60 mph time, securing first place on the 0 to 60 leaderboard for manual cars.

The EVO 7 also wasn’t available to the US, unlike its successor, the EVO 8

Next up – the quarter-mile. The Lancer EVO, once again, goes first and lays down 12.54 seconds at 111.32 mph (179.15 km/h). Thanks to quick gear changes and flat-foot shifting, the Subaru manages to win here as well. It covers the quarter-mile in an incredible 11.6 seconds at 121.87 mph (196.13 km/h).

The cars line up for two races – a standing start drag race and a rolling race. Subaru makes a sloppy start, which gives the EVO an edge. However, Subbies makes a comeback and takes a convincing win. The rolling race, meanwhile, is a slightly different story. EVO rockets ahead, but the Impreza STI wagon manages to overtake him right before the finish.

If the Subaru didn’t have straight-cut gears, it may have been closer or even a different outcome. However, you run what you brought, and Gary – the owner of the Subaru – brought the quicker car for this race.
