The second-generation Jeep Compass has yet to see a comprehensive mid-cycle facelift, but it just became one of the first Jeeps to feature a hybrid drivetrain. The electrified Compass made its global debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, alongside the Renegade hybrid.

Up to 240 Horsepower

Although it has yet to release output figures for the Compass hybrid (still pending homologation), Jeep says that specs will be similar to the Renegade. The latter's hybrid powertrain pairs a turbocharged, 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The four-banger is the same that Jeep introduced in 2018. It delivers either 148 or 177 horsepower, depending trim.

Jeep didn't have much to say about the electric motor, but claims that the hybrid combo cranks out between 190 and 240 horsepower. The 240-horsepower version should push the Compass from 0 to 62 mph in around seven seconds.

Decent electric range, lower emissions

This is far from impressive when compared to actual EVs, but it's not bad for a hybrid. Also, it's worth noting that the Compass is, alongside the Renegade, the first Jeep capable of running on battery power only.

Emissions have also decreased rather dramatically thanks to the baterry and electric power combo. While the Compass powered by the 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine emits 144 grams of CO2 per kg, the addition of the electric motor reduces these figure to only 50 grams per kg combined. There's no word and fuel economy just yet.

Enhanced off-road capability

The hybrid drivetrain also makes the Compass a better SUV on the unbeaten path. Not only the electric motor adds extra torque that can be used while climbing rocks, but the new drivetrain layout also transfers power to the wheels with enhanced precision. This allows the two axles to control torque in a more effective way than a mechanical system.

Unique displays

While both the exterior and interior are identical to the standard Compass, the instrument cluster and infotainment system have been modified for hybrid duty. Using both screes you can monitor information related to the hybrid drivetrain, including data about battery consumption, all-electric range, and combined hybrid range.
