With cars like the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and the launch of new hybrid Keeps in Europe, it’s easy to think that Jeep and its parent company Stellantis could be steering deep into electrification. This is especially true when you consider Jeep's first electric vehicle that’s expected to arrive early next year. All of this is certainly accurate, but Jeep and parent company Stellantis is still sinking money into research and development of new combustion engines. The latest of which is, apparently, a brand-new inline-six that will be showcased first by Jeep before it trickles over to other sister brands.

Jeeps New Inline-Six In the Age of Electrification

A new report from Mopar Insiders claims that this new inline-six will be revealed during the 2022 New York Auto Show claims that this new inline-six will be revealed during the 2022 New York Auto Show }} that runs from April 15 to the 24th. It’s actually a big deal as this will be the first inline-six engine to be offered in a Jeep product since the AMC-derived 4.0-liter straight-six was discontinued back in December 2006. The new engine is internally known as the GME-T6, and it will be offered in a range of brands as it will fall under the Global Medium Engine family of Stellantis.

This news has yet to be confirmed and was relayed by “well-placed sources,” so take it all with a small grain of salt, but the idea is that it will be available in three different states of tune. Those states of tune have yet to be disclosed, however, the first to arrive is said to be the most powerful and it’ll be offered in the Jeep Wagoneer range,} potentially higher up in the trim range. Regardless of the state of tune, the engine won’t move beyond 3.0-liters of displacement, but it will eventually be offered with hybrid assist.

As the report goes, a plug-in hybrid version of the GME-T6 will be revealed sometime in 2023. This will pair that 3.0-liter engine with a ZF eight-speed automatic and an integrated, high-voltage, motor-generator. That motor will produce a total of 100 kW or about 134 horsepower. The report also claims that a liquid-cooled, eTorque, motor-generator will replace the conventional alternator.

If you dive deep enough into the rabbit hole, you can see exactly where the new inline-six will land next. For years now, it’s been rumored that Dodge would transition some of its models to a straight-six, namely the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger along with a few of Ram’s trucks. That new engine was said to be called the Tornado and was also considered to be a brand-new development, so that and the new GME-T6 could be one and the same. Either way, we’ll find out more soon enough as April is right around the corner.
