Jeep Wants the Hemi-Killing Hurricane Inline-Six to Redefine Performance

The Hurricane engine won't be exclusive to the Wagoneer lineup for long

Stellantis debuted the new Hurricane Inline-six engine at the New York International Auto Show in April 1022 sporting improvements in both power and efficiency. The automaker chose to debut the engine in one of the largest vehicles in its portfolio, the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The long-term goal of this new twin-turbocharged six-cylinder is to replace the iconic Hemi V-8, and its placement in the Wagoneer lineup is just the beginning.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is Defined by the Hurricane Inline-Six

The Grand Wagoneer has received some updates for the 2023 model year, particularly with its powertrains. Previously, the Grand Wagoneer was only offered with a 6.4-liter V-8 engine while the option to upgrade to the Hurricane inline-six would cost you an additional $2,000.

These engines still have yet to ship in a Grand Wagoneer, and the company is already making it standard on the entire 2023 lineup aside from the "base" trim. The V-8 will now be a no-cost option on all higher trims of the luxury SUV for the remainder of the 2023 model year. The Grand Wagoneer is offered in five trims, including Series I, Series II, Series II Obsidian, Series III, and Series III Obsidian. Surprisingly, pricing has remained the same for the 2023 model year at $90,640, though the cheapest way to get into the Hurricane engine starts at $97,735.

What is the Hurricane Inline-six engine?

The new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, dubbed "Hurricane," is poised to be a long-term replacement for the 6.4-liter and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engines. Its debut in the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer lineup also revealed some impressive power figures. The engine produces 420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque when optioned in the Wagoneer, a modest bump over the 5.7-liter V-8's 392 horsepower.

When optioned in the Grand Wagoneer, the Hurricane engine sees an increase to 510 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Like in the Wagoneer, the Inline-six offers more power than its V-8 counterpart in the Grand Wagoneer as well, producing 29 more horsepower.

Other Jeep Models With the Hurricane Inline-Six

It's no secret what Stellantis is aiming to do with this new twin-turbo inline-six powertrain. In the Wagoneer lineup, the six-cylinder offers more power and improved fuel economy than both V-8 counterparts. Additionally, with Dodge announced that 2023 is the last year to get a 5.7-liter, 6.4-liter, or 6.2-liter V-8 engine from its lineup. This means that the next stop for the Hurricane engine likely will be Ram pickup trucks, though we may find it in the current or updated Charger and Challenger to be sold alongside its e-Muscle lineup. I don't know about you, but a 510-horsepower twin-turbo inline-six engine in a Charger or Challenger sounds exciting.
