Ken Block To Rock a Hyundai i20 At ARA 2022 And It’s A Family Affair
The ’Most Blocks’ in a Rally championship, Ken Block along with wife Lucy and daughter Lia will compete across two classes of this years’ American Rally Association Championshipby Khris Bharath, on
Fans of Ken Block and the Hoonigan channel, you guys are in for a treat this year as the Hoonigan Racing Division’s stint, at this year’s American Rally Association Championship kicked off a few days ago.
It’s going to be a fun year ahead as you will see Ken Block with his wife Lucy and Lia compete across two classes off the ARA Championship. This is, in fact, the most ‘Blocks’ in a rally championship ever, where all three members of the Block family will compete alongside each other.
Ken Block’s Ride
Ken Block will be at the helm of a 2C Compétition prepared 2019 Hyundai i20 WRC car. Ken will have to get to grips with this beast as the season unfolds. The car was prepared by a French rally team based out of Theirs in France. Under the hood lies a 1.6-liter engine with a modern WRC Aero package, which promises blistering performance.
“This might be my favorite season of rally in the U.S. ever. Great competition and I’m driving a modern-era WRC car all year!! This is epic! And, my wife is stepping up to open class in an AWD car, AND my daughter Lia is competing in a proper FWD turbo car - all as one team. All three of us have been preparing and building up to this kind of family setup, so it’s really rad to be here. And we’re kicking it off in my favorite rally of the year, The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood. It’s going to be a FUN year.” - Ken Block
But the rally legend will have to adapt to a different driving style as this is an altogether different beast from the cars that he’s used to. Other changes done to the car in order to comply with the 2022 ARA O4WD class rules include a reduction in the resistor size (which creates a reduction in power) and the addition of ballast so that the race car meets the minimum weight requirements.
Lia Block’s Ride
Now, for 15-year-old Lia Block, racing is obviously a big part of her life. If you want to see what she can do with the right set of wheels, she recently took on a 4000 hp C6 Vette and the Model S Plaid in the 1400 horsepower Hoonicorn vs the World Series.
“It’s cool to be competing in a rally with my mom and dad… but it’s going to be even better when I can beat ‘em! That’s my biggest motivator right now… haha. It’s really cool to be competing in the rally series I grew up around, as it was always a dream for me to be a part of it. Here I am with a really rad looking car, and the support of Hoonigan Racing Division. Big thanks to everyone who has helped me get to this point!” - Lia Block
Coming to the ARA, Lia will be racing in her first-ever full rally championship on a driver’s permit. Lia will compete with an M-Sport built Fiesta R2T in the open two-wheel drive class, in what is the second only rally of her career. She also debuts an all-new livery designed by renowned artist Death Spray Custom.
Matt James will be Lia’s co-driver. Her time at the Dirtfish & Team O’Neal rally schools saw her take on everything from UTV racing to kart racing. She took a podium at a Nitro Rallycross Championship behind the wheel of a Sierra 700 RX.
Lucy Block’s Ride
Last, but certainly not the least, we come to Ken’s wife, Lucy Block’s AWD M-Sport Fiesta Rally 3. This is, in fact, her AWD rally debut, stepping up from the 2WD Ford First R2T that she’s already raced in the past.
“I am definitely not a “soccer mom”. Well, maybe a “snowboard mom”. But there’s gotta be a term for “rally racing mom”, right?? I love to race every chance I get - I mean, who doesn’t love to slide a car sideways through the forest at 90mph??” said Lucy. “This year, our very talented oldest spawn Lia is driving the Fiesta that I raced in for the past couple of years, so she is getting a very good “hand-me-down” to start her rally racing career in. But, I’m really excited to do my first race in an AWD turbo car here at 100 Acre Wood and my first full season ever!” - Lucy Block
Despite the Fiesta Rally 3 lacking the full beans in terms of a wide-body, aero bits, and the suspension travel that you’re used to seeing in a higher-spec WRC or R5 spec race car, it would be the perfect package in her pursuit to become the “Most Badass Mom in Rally”. Lucy will be accompanied by co-driver Michelle Miller.
