Kia has is serious about electric mobility and has a range of new models in the works. Following the success of the e-Niro and the well-received Kia EV6, the Korean giant is already planning a new full-size electric SUV. The Concept EV9 seen here is currently only a study model, but several design aspects from the display car can be expected to appear on Kia production models in the future.

The Kia EV9 is expected to be a rather angular and robustly constructed SUV, similar in size to the Kia Telluride. This concept will eventually mature into a production car with the biggest footprint of any Kia to date, in the South Korean automaker’s expanding electric lineup.

The KIA EV9 Concept marries traditional SUV dimensions with modern design elements. The heavily sculpted fenders draw attention to the wheels, which are positioned far apart, resulting in a large wheelbase. Because of the use of LED technology, both the headlights and taillights are quite subtle. Apart from that, the pillars are tinted and this gives the illusion of a floating roof, which definitely suits this towering SUV.

"The Kia Concept EV9 combines forward-thinking design, state-of-the-art technology, and an advanced all-electric powertrain in a groundbreaking total package," the manufacturer says.

Interior

On the inside, the cockpit of this research model looks rather basic, with a huge display, a wide center console, and an interestingly designed steering wheel. But I guess minimalism is the way to go with sustainable mobility. You have a large panoramic sunroof that lets in ample light into the cabin, making it feel even roomier. Speaking of sustainability, Kia has used recycled mesh for the floor, recycled plastic bottles on the seats, and vegan leather upholstery. The digital cockpit merges the instrument cluster and infotainment screens into a single panel, while the conventional steering wheel has been substituted by a yoke.

The EV9 will be underpinned by a larger variation of the E-GMP platform, that is currently used on the Kia Ev6, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Genesis GV60

The preview shows that the EV9 offers three rows of seats and plenty of passenger space thanks to the electric platform’s smart packaging. Without a doubt, the final version of the Concept EV9 will be built on a larger variation of the E-GMP platform, a modular basis developed exclusively for Kia and Hyundai’s electric vehicles. It is already currently being used on the EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Genesis GV60.
